Look for claims that attribute a model's properties, limits, or behavior directly to reality. - The label "semiotic fallacy" is used by other authors for different patterns (including what this site calls the ontological fallacy, and some forms of appeal to consequences). This definition follows fallacies.online. If a text uses the term in another sense, do not assume it describes this pattern. ## Does NOT apply when - Symbols are used transparently as conventional shorthand without carrying ontological weight in an argument. - Compliance with regulatory or instructional symbols is discussed purely as a matter of rules/laws rather than confusing the sign with the hazard it warns about. - The discussion explicitly analyzes semiotics, linguistics, or modeling theory without making claims about external reality. ## Commonly confused with - **[Hypostatization](abstraction/hypostatization)** ([MD](abstraction/hypostatization.md)) – treats an *abstract concept* as a concrete agent. Ask: is the error about abstract-vs-concrete agency (→ hypostatization), or symbol-vs-referent confusion (→ semiotic)? - **[Ontological fallacy](abstraction/ontological_fallacy)** ([MD](abstraction/ontological_fallacy.md)) – assumes something exists because it has a name. Ask: does the argument leap from word to existence (→ ontological), or mistake a representation for the thing itself (→ semiotic)? - **[Goodhart’s law](glossary/goodharts_law)** ([MD](glossary/goodharts_law.md)) – optimizing a metric destroys its value as a measure. Ask: is this about gaming/optimizing a proxy (→ Goodhart), or fundamentally confusing the map with the territory (→ semiotic)? - **[Reification](glossary/reification)** ([MD](glossary/reification.md)) – umbrella term for treating abstractions as concrete things; semiotic fallacy specifically targets the *symbol-referent* boundary. ## Examples > **Input:** "The car's engine warning indicator is no longer lit; the problem is gone." > **Output:** The warning lamp is an *indicator of a problem*, not the problem itself. Make sure the underlying technical issue is resolved and not only that it is no longer indicated. > **Input:** "He achieved a very high score in the IQ test, therefore he is very intelligent." > **Output:** An IQ score is a metric that aims to measure specific aspects of certain human abilities that correlate highly with certain aspects of the rather abstract concept of intelligence. However, it is not the same as intelligence, which cannot be measured.
