They however do not imply the *systemic* aspect and are therefore both 'fallacies of emergence'. ## Does NOT apply when - A component genuinely is the primary or sole contributor to a property, and other parts play no meaningful causal role (e.g., "the lungs perform gas exchange" – accurate even though circulation supports it indirectly). - The speaker uses a shorthand ("the brain decided", "management approved") as conventional abbreviation without drawing further conclusions from it. - The discussion explicitly analyses systems theory, emergence, or component interactions without misattributing properties across levels. ## Commonly confused with - **[Fallacy of emergence](logic/emergence/index)** ([MD](logic/emergence/index.md)) – the more *general* category without the need to refer to a *system*. Attributing it solely to the brain commits a *mereological fallacy* (system property → single component), which is also an instance of the *fallacy of division* (whole → part). A more accurate framing: "The brain integrates inputs from across the body to coordinate behaviour." > **Input:** "Every individual in this organisation is highly skilled, so the organisation must be highly effective." > **Output:** ffectiveness at the organisational level depends on coordination, communication, and shared goals – properties that emerge from interaction and are not guaranteed by individual skill alone. This is a *mereological fallacy* (component property → system), and also an instance of the *fallacy of composition* (parts → whole).
