Name-calling

Core claim: Instead of engaging with the substance of an argument or position, the speaker is personally attacked through insults, derogatory labels, threats, or accusations – thereby making further factual discussion impossible.

• A response to a claim consists primarily of insults, slurs, or derogatory characterisations of the person who made it, with no substantive engagement with their reasoning.
• The attack uses threats (explicit or implicit) to shut down further discussion rather than to address the argument.
• The speaker is caricatured – their position is misrepresented in an exaggerated, contemptible form and then attacked as if that caricature were what they actually said.
• The personal attack functions as a conversation stopper: its purpose (intentional or not) is to end the discussion rather than advance it.

• Name-calling has two main mechanisms: (1) Derailing – shifting the discussion from the factual level to a personal conflict, making further substantive exchange impossible; and (2) Provocation – deliberately triggering an equally heated emotional reaction that produces the same result. Both can occur simultaneously.
• The insult does not need to be factually false to constitute this fallacy. Even if the speaker genuinely has the negative trait being named, using it as a substitute for engaging with their argument is still name-calling.
• This form is distinct from circumstantial ad hominem, where the attack targets the speaker's motives or interests (e.g., “you only say that because you profit from it”) rather than using outright insults.

• A person's demonstrated track record of dishonesty, bias, or incompetence in a specific domain is cited as relevant context for evaluating their claim – provided the argument still engages with the substance.
• Strongly worded but substantive criticism that happens to include emotionally charged language alongside actual counterarguments (e.g., “That's a terrible and dangerous idea because X, Y, Z”).
• The discussion is explicitly about rhetorical style, tone policing, or discourse norms rather than the truth of a claim.

• Ad hominem (MD) – the general category for all personal attacks in argumentation. Ask: is this specifically about insults and derogatory labels (→ name-calling), or a broader pattern of ignoring the person's credibility/motives (→ ad hominem)?
• Ad feminam (MD) – gender-specific variant targeting women or girls. Ask: is the insult gendered in its mechanism and specifically using female stereotypes (e.g., “hysterical woman”) (→ ad feminam), or a general slur applicable to anyone (→ name-calling)?
• Ad virum (MD) – gender-specific variant targeting men or boys. Same discriminator as above, but using male stereotypes.
• Objectification (MD) – reducing people to objects, tools, or sub-human categories. Ask: is the language used as a personal attack in argumentation to dismiss someone's point (→ name-calling), or does it systematically strip people of their humanity in a broader context (→ objectification)? Dehumanising slurs (e.g., “vermin”, “parasites”) can be both simultaneously.
• Derailing (MD) – the broader tactic of shifting a discussion off-topic. Name-calling is one specific means of derailing; derailing can also be achieved by topic changes, non-sequiturs, etc.

Input: “You're just a lazy conspiracy theorist who doesn't want to do the actual research.”
Output: This dismisses the speaker's claim through insult (“lazy”, “conspiracy theorist”) without engaging with what they actually argued. Address the specific evidence or reasoning they presented, or identify concrete errors in it.

Input: “Anyone who supports that policy is a heartless monster.”
Output: Labelling opponents as “monsters” replaces substantive disagreement with moral condemnation. The argument for or against the policy should be evaluated on its merits (evidence, trade-offs, consequences), not on whether one agrees with the speaker's characterisation of those who disagree.

Input: “Oh, so you're the one telling me what to do? Go back to your little corner.”
Output: This is a personal attack and dismissal that avoids addressing whatever point was actually made. The substance of the original claim remains unexamined.
