Accident fallacy

Core claim: A generally valid rule (law, principle, norm) is applied rigidly to a specific case in which special circumstances would warrant an exception.

• A universally stated rule or principle is enforced in a situation that clearly falls outside its intended scope or prerequisites.
• The argument treats the rule as absolute and ignores relevant contextual factors (emergency, self-defence, disproportionate harm) that would justify deviating from it.
• An automated system applies a rule mechanically without accounting for edge cases or exceptions (e.g., traffic cameras fining an ambulance, content filters blocking harmless words).
• The insistence on the rule is presented as morally or legally binding even though applying it here would produce an obviously absurd or harmful outcome.

• The term “accident” here derives from Latin accĭdens = “circumstance, non-essential aspect”, it should not be interpreted in the modern sense as in “traffic accident”.
• This fallacy is particularly relevant for moral predicaments: It describes a situation where a deontological approach (following rules strictly) was used in a situation where a consequentialist one (decisions based on the outcome) would have been more appropriate.

• A rule is applied within its intended scope and no special circumstances exist that would justify an exception.
• The speaker explicitly acknowledges possible exceptions but provides a reasoned argument for why none apply in this specific case.
• The rule being discussed is genuinely absolute (e.g., logical axioms, mathematical theorems) with no legitimate domain of exception.

• Hasty generalization (MD) – the reverse direction: a universal rule is derived from too few or unrepresentative cases. Ask: is the error about creating an unjustified general rule (→ hasty), or applying a well-founded rule where it shouldn't reach (→ accident)?
• Overwhelming exception (MD) – a general claim that is technically true but so riddled with exceptions as to be practically useless. Ask: is the problem that the generalisation itself is misleading because of too many exceptions (→ overwhelming), or that a specific case is being forced under a rule despite clear exceptional circumstances (→ accident)?
• (Dogmatic) coherentism (MD) — claims something is true or real because it fits an existing narrative, ideology, or theoretical system. Ask: is the argument that a general rule should be applied, even when an exception is warranted (→ accident), or that it should be interpreted in a way consistent with a system or worldview, even though there is evidence to the contrary (→ coherentism)? These often overlap!
• Appeal to authority (MD) – the validity of a rule is justified solely by its source (a law, an institution, an expert or a tradition), rather than by its content or applicability. Ask: is the error about why the rule is considered binding at all (→ authority), or about whether a well-founded rule is being applied outside its intended scope in a specific case (→ accident)? The latter is often the result of the earlier fallacy.

Input: “It's illegal to injure someone, so a surgeon performing emergency surgery is committing a crime.”
Output: The general prohibition against injuring others does not cover situations where the injury is necessary to save a life. Emergency surgery is a recognised exception.

Input: “The content filter flagged my post, so it must contain offensive language.”
Output: Automated filters apply a simple keyword rule and cannot distinguish context (e.g., place names, medical terms). The flag is a signal to review, not proof that the content is actually offensive – a human should check before acting on it.

Input: “You must always obey your superiors' orders; refusing is never justified.”
Output: The duty of obedience in hierarchical organisations has clear limits: orders that are manifestly illegal or violate fundamental moral principles (e.g., killing civilians) must be refused, regardless of rank or institutional pressure.
