Amphiboly

Definition: An ambiguity in a statement caused by its grammatical or syntactic structure rather than by the meaning of individual words.

• Context (surrounding sentences, situation, shared knowledge) makes only one interpretation plausible.
• The ambiguous phrasing is incidental and not load-bearing for any claim being made.
• The statement is explicitly presented as an example of ambiguity (e.g., in linguistics or rhetoric discussion).

• A syntactically ambiguous statement is used as a premise or conclusion, and the intended reading differs from what a reasonable reader would infer.
• The speaker exploits structural ambiguity to make a provocative claim that can later be retracted by switching to a different (less controversial) interpretation of the same sentence.
• Generic generalizations (“X are Y”) omit quantifiers, leaving it unclear whether “all” or “some” is meant – particularly when this allows the speaker to deny making a universal or discriminatory claim after being challenged.

• Amphiboly is a sub-form of equivocation. The distinction: equivocation involves a term shifting meaning; amphiboly involves the sentence structure allowing multiple parses.
• A related but narrower concept is prosody, where intonation or stress creates the ambiguity (every prosody is an amphiboly, but not vice versa). In written text, prosodies are rare and the distinction has little practical value.

• Equivocation (MD) – the parent category. Ask: is the ambiguity in a word's meaning (→ equivocation) or in the grammatical structure of the sentence (→ amphiboly)?
• Generic generalisation (MD) – a specific class of amphiboly where “X are Y” lacks a quantifier. Ask: is this about missing quantification in a generic statement (→ generic generalisation), or about broader syntactic ambiguity (→ amphiboly)?

Input: “The man watched the woman with binoculars.”
Output: Syntactically ambiguous – it's unclear who holds the binoculars. Such a statement cannot serve as a reliable factual claim without disambiguation.

Input: “Politicians are corrupt.”
Output: This generic generalization omits a quantifier – it could mean “all politicians” or merely “some politicians tend to be.” The speaker can exploit this ambiguity: make the provocative universal claim, then retreat to the weaker “I only meant some of them” when challenged.
