Bandwagon fallacy

Core claim: A position is supported (or rejected) primarily because many people hold it or do it – treating popularity or majority opinion as evidence of correctness.

• The central argument for a claim is “everyone believes this”, “most people think…”, or “it's the popular view” without independent justification.
• A position is dismissed because it is held by a minority (“only a few crazy people believe that”).
• Commercial or social pressure to conform is presented as evidence: “If so many people buy/use/believe X, it must be good/true.”
• The trend of an opinion (rising/falling popularity) is used as proof of its validity.

• Distinguish between descriptive use (“most economists agree that…”, which can be a legitimate signal of consensus in a field) and normative use (“everyone thinks it, so it must be true”). The former cites expertise; the latter cites numbers.
• In democratic contexts, majority vote is a legitimate decision procedure for collective action – but it does not make the voted-on position factually correct. Flag only when popularity is used as evidence of truth, not as a tiebreaker in governance.

• The argument cites a relevant expert consensus and uses “most experts agree” as shorthand for that (→ legitimate appeal to authority).
• A statistical majority is cited as descriptive data (“70 % of surveyed consumers prefer X”) without inferring truth from it.
• Social norms are discussed descriptively in sociology/anthropology without being used as proof of a factual claim.

• Appeal to authority (MD) – relies on the status of specific sources. Ask: Is the weight carried by who says it (named experts/institutions) (→ appeal to authority), or by how many say it (anonymous crowd) (→ bandwagon)?
• Appeal to tradition (MD) – relies on duration. Ask: Is the argument “everyone does this now” (→ bandwagon), or “we've always done this” (→ tradition)?
• False authority (MD) – cites a specific unqualified source. Ask: Is there a named (incompetent) person/institution (→ false authority), or an anonymous “everyone/most people” (→ bandwagon)?

Input: “Millions of people are switching to this new diet, so it has to be the right one.” Output: Popularity is not evidence of nutritional correctness. Evaluate the diet on peer-reviewed research and physiological plausibility, not on adoption numbers.

Input: “Only a tiny fringe group still doubts climate change – that proves they're wrong.” Output: The size of the dissenting group is irrelevant to the factual question. What matters is the quality of the evidence and arguments on both sides. (Note: in this specific case the consensus is strong, but the reasoning “few people disagree → they must be wrong” is still bandwagon logic.)
