# Objectification (of human beings)

**Core claim:** People are treated as objects, tools, or functional resources rather than as autonomous individuals with emotions, agency, and complex needs.

## Applies when
- Language reduces people to utilitarian terms ("resources," "assets," "units") that strip away human context in argumentative or policy-making contexts.
- Reasoning assumes humans will behave like passive objects (predictable, unreactive, infinitely adaptable) rather than agents capable of emotional or social pushback.
- Substituting the actual human subjects for the functional label would reveal ignored consequences (e.g., morale loss, resistance, ethical violations).

## Notes
- An extreme form of *Objectification of human beings* applies when people are no longer seen as human beings but referred to in a way that strips them of basic human rights and dignity. Such cases should be labelled as "dehumanisation".

## Does NOT apply when
- Statistical or administrative abstraction is used transparently within a limited functional context (e.g., HR headcount metrics, medical triage protocols) without denying underlying humanity.
- Diplomatic or euphemistic phrasing is employed but the actual decision-making process still accounts for human impact and agency.
- The discussion explicitly analyzes objectification as a sociological phenomenon rather than enacting it in practice.

## Commonly confused with
- **[Hypostatization](abstraction/hypostatization)** ([MD](abstraction/hypostatization.md)) – treats *abstract concepts* (markets, society) as concrete agents. Ask: is the target an idea/system, or actual human beings?
- **[Anthropomorphisation](abstraction/anthropomorphisation)** ([MD](abstraction/anthropomorphisation.md)) – opposite direction: attributes *human* traits to non-human entities.
- **[Reification](glossary/reification)** ([MD](glossary/reification.md)) – umbrella term literally meaning "to turn something into a thing"; *objectification* specifically refers to the reduction of *people* to things.

> **Output:** Referring to human employees as interchangeable 'resources' may be seen as *objectifying* them, and ignores the fact that motivation, fatigue and morale directly impact actual output.

> **Output:** The euphemistic abstraction 'collateral damage' obscures the human reality of loss and suffering behind sterile terminology. Consider rewriting it as: "The operation resulted in civilian casualties."
