Hasty generalization
Core claim: A broad or universal rule is inferred from too few (or unrepresentative) examples.
Applies when
- A conclusion about an entire group, class, or category is drawn from one or a very small number of instances.
- The sample used for the generalization is not representative of the population being described (e.g., convenience sampling, single anecdote).
- The generalization covers a diverse group in which substantial variation is expected, making any single instance uninformative about the whole.
Notes
- This fallacy is most objectionable when applied to groups of people, as it underpins stereotypes and prejudice. In such cases, even if confirming examples exist within the group, they are insufficient to attribute the trait to the group as a whole.
- The error is directional: it goes from specific instances → general rule. This distinguishes it from the accident fallacy (general rule → specific case).
Does NOT apply when
- A statistical sample of adequate size and methodology supports the generalization, even if the sample is small relative to the population.
- The speaker explicitly hedges the claim (“in my experience”, “I've noticed that…”) without presenting it as a universal law.
- The scope of the conclusion matches the scope of the evidence (e.g., “the three patients I saw today had flu” → no generalization beyond those three).
Commonly confused with
- False analogy (MD) – transfers a property between two things based on their similarity in other respects. Ask: is the error about drawing a rule from too few instances (→ hasty generalization), or about assuming one thing shares a property of another because they are similar in some ways (→ false analogy)?
- Accident fallacy (MD) – applies a general rule rigidly to a specific case where exceptions should apply. Ask: does the reasoning go from instances to a rule (→ hasty generalization), or from a rule to an atypical instance (→ accident)?
Examples
Input: “My ex-boyfriend cheated on me. All men are cheaters.” Output: One personal experience is not sufficient evidence for a universal claim about an entire gender. The conclusion vastly overreaches the available data.
Input: “I met two people from that country and both were rude, so everyone there must be unfriendly.” Output: Two encounters are far too small a sample to characterize a population of millions with enormous internal diversity. A generalization about an entire national group requires representative evidence, not anecdotal impressions.
