Mereological fallacy
Core claim: A property that belongs to a system as a whole (or emerges from the interaction of its components) is attributed solely to one component – or vice versa, properties of individual components are assumed to carry over unchanged to the system level.
Applies when
- A property of a complex system (body, organisation, ecosystem, market…) is credited exclusively to a single component, ignoring that other parts contribute meaningfully (e.g., “the brain decides our behaviour” without acknowledging hormonal, sensory, and muscular feedback).
- Properties of individual components are assumed to persist unchanged at the system level, ignoring emergent or resultant effects of their interaction (e.g., “each department is profitable, therefore the company as a whole must be profitable”).
- The argument treats a subsystem as self-sufficient for producing a property that actually requires the full system – the classic “homunculus” pattern where an internal agent is posited to explain what only the whole apparatus produces.
Notes
- The important distinguishing aspect for this fallacy is that it specifically refers to the transfer of properties within a functional system. A similar, more general fallacy is the “fallacy of emergence” (MD), which does not have the 'system' requirement.
- The specialised forms “fallacy of division” (MD) and “fallacy of composition” (MD) refer to the direction of the transfer: system-to-component → division, component-to-system → composition. They however do not imply the systemic aspect and are therefore both 'fallacies of emergence'.
Does NOT apply when
- A component genuinely is the primary or sole contributor to a property, and other parts play no meaningful causal role (e.g., “the lungs perform gas exchange” – accurate even though circulation supports it indirectly).
- The speaker uses a shorthand (“the brain decided”, “management approved”) as conventional abbreviation without drawing further conclusions from it.
- The discussion explicitly analyses systems theory, emergence, or component interactions without misattributing properties across levels.
Commonly confused with
- Fallacy of emergence (MD) – the more general category without the need to refer to a system. Ask: is the error specifically about the transfer of properties within a system (→ mereological) or more general between any kind of whole-parts relationship (→ emergence).
- Ecological fallacy (MD) – similar in that it involves transferring properties across levels, but specifically about statistical data from a higher aggregate to a lower. Ask: is the error about assuming a statistical property at an aggregate level must also hold for lower aggregates or even individuals (→ ecological), or about a functional/causal aspect of a system being misattributed between component and whole (→ mereological)?
- Fallacy of division (MD) – specifically the transfer of a property from a whole to its parts, not necessarily limited to the systemic aspect. Can be mentioned in addition to merological fallacy to indicate that there is a specific name for the direction of transfer.
- Fallacy of composition (MD) – conversely, the transfer from parts to a whole in general. Counterpart of 'division' and should be used the same way.
Examples
Input: “The brain makes all our decisions; the rest of the body just executes them.”
Output: Decision-making involves the full nervous system plus hormonal signals, gut sensations, and muscular feedback. Attributing it solely to the brain commits a mereological fallacy (system property → single component), which is also an instance of the fallacy of division (whole → part). A more accurate framing: “The brain integrates inputs from across the body to coordinate behaviour.”
Input: “Every individual in this organisation is highly skilled, so the organisation must be highly effective.”
Output: ffectiveness at the organisational level depends on coordination, communication, and shared goals – properties that emerge from interaction and are not guaranteed by individual skill alone. This is a mereological fallacy (component property → system), and also an instance of the fallacy of composition (parts → whole).
